Chapter 4 discusses the general principles for the optimal design of structures, based on the anisotropic properties of materials. Problems of maximizing the ultimate rupture load, total stiffness and stored energy capacity are formulated. The optimal orientation of the anisotropy axes in structure elements is studied, based on tensor notation in space and vector and tensor notations in the six‐dimensional stress space. Necessary optimality conditions are presented using different notations.
