Evolution of present day engine‐propelled automobiles over many years is discussed. Importance of load resistance is noted. Drive cycles influence the vehicle fuel economy and propulsion requirements, and their importance is emphasized. Load and engine characteristics are indicated graphically to emphasize how they come into picture. Meaning of load is clearly defined. A summarized discussion and comparison of various types of systems, i.e. pure electric, hybrid, plug‐in hybrid, and fuel cell vehicles are made. Constituent elements and system level architectures relevant to these vehicles are also discussed. Logical process of evolution from conventional to hybrid vehicles is slowly brought forth.
