Wireless technology has been a fast growing consumer‐based industry since its introduction in the 1990s. It was not until recently that the public safety and military sectors began catching up with this technology. This chapter provides a background history of the uses and applications of Wi‐Fi within these sectors as well as some insight into where it is going. It gives an insight into the growth of vehicular networking systems for both public safety and military applications. The chapter is structured as a chronological storyline to explain the historical significance of events and the response by the industry to supply the new needs of this market. Different network architectures currently in use are explored, as well as the future applications currently in design or prototype development stages. Technological progress in wireless networking of the vehicular environment for the military and for public safety has come a long way. military communication; safety; wireless LAN
