Fixed‐wing aerodynamics is probably the most widely discussed and explained topic in the aeronautical literature (including innumerable online sources). It is the technical basis for the vast majority of air vehicles and it has the virtue of being easy to visualise and, therefore, easy to understand. This chapter provides a reasonably comprehensive set of methods for estimating the lift, drag, and pitching moment of a wing up to a Mach number of 0.85, plus Diederich's method for estimating the spanwise lift distribution. In addition, there is discussion on additional factors that influence lift generation and on an approach to estimating the drag distribution. The aim of ‘useful aerodynamics’ is to generate sufficient lift in order to get a vehicle into the air and to keep it there. This is achieved most efficiently using aerofoils, which are familiar curved shapes, rounded at the leading edge and tapering to a point at the trailing edge.
