Controllable suspensions are usually classified as: control of ride height and attitude (pitch and roll angle); actively controlled damping, usually called semi‐active suspension; and active suspensions. The use of height control to compensate for changes in load is rarely required for armoured vehicles because the ratio of laden to unladen weight is usually small. The investigation of active suspensions showed useful benefits in terms of body attitude control for wheeled and tracked vehicles although the simplest method of obtaining pitch control with a rear‐drive tracked vehicle is to use a compensating idler. DERA built a number of test vehicles and carried out laboratory tests and computer modelling studies on various active and semi‐active systems. Semi‐active suspensions are designed to improve ride but have limited effect on attitude changes. Fully active suspensions are designed to improve ride and/or to reduce body attitude changes from body applied forces.
