This chapter includes aerodynamic fundamentals, geometry, wing/body combination, all‐moving tail, flight trim, flight stability, trim drag, steady‐state flight performance and dynamic modes. It provides a comprehensive introduction to the aircraft aerodynamics plus flight properties (trim, stability, and performance), together with an overview of the longitudinal dynamics. The chapter presents a lot of theory, which enables the extensive calculations contributing to preliminary analysis of an aircraft configuration. For level‐flight equilibrium, lift equals weight. This applies along the full length of the cruise path, during which the weight of the aircraft will decrease as fuel is burned. Linearisation is a process for representing the dynamic behaviour of the aircraft as it is perturbed from an equilibrium flight condition. Essentially, the forces and moments are divided into the linear components, each relating to one causal factor.
