Modeling and simulation have widely been used in support of hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) design and performance analysis. Such simulation systems can be used to undertake various studies and assessments under given driving conditions. Regardless of the type of hybrid vehicle system, the hybrid electric propulsion system is basically the same and mainly comprises a prime mover, an electric motor with a controller, a DC‐DC converter, a DC‐AC inverter, an energy storage system, and a power split device as well as a transmission system. This chapter addressees how to size system components and calculate drivability and other performances based on the system model and simulation. An HEV/plug‐in HEV (PHEV) consists of two movers: an internal combustion engine (ICE) propulsion system and an electric propulsion system. The chapter gives a few mechanisms that give an ability to reduce fuel consumption and emissions in HEV/PHEV.
