This chapter describes how to acquire and display images using a USB camera. Throughout the vision programming tasks, Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX) (which is installed with the LabVIEW software) is always a good utility to test and ensure that an imaging system is working satisfactorily prior to programming. The chapter presents steps in order to configure the imaging system. Vision function palettes within the LabVIEW programming environment are organized in subpalettes such as Vision Utilities, Image Processing, Machine Vision, NI‐IMAQ, and NI‐IMAQdx. Vision Utilities include image file handling, image management, and pixel editing functions to manipulate and display images. Image Processing includes low‐level VIs used to analyze, filter, and process images. Machine Vision consists of high‐level functions that simplify common machine vision tasks. NI‐IMAQ and NI‐IMAQdx provide functions involved with image acquisitions.
