This chapter addresses the question of whether aided/automatic target recognition ought to be used as part of an unmanned vehicle system, in the trade space of performance versus survivability. It begins with a background overview of the operational context, important technical issues, and previous research. The chapter then formulates the question in quantitative terms and solves the mathematics. Automatic target recognition allocates the target recognition activity to machines only. It is needed to contrast with extended human sensing, where target recognition is allocated entirely to humans. Unmanned vehicle data links can and have been counter‐detected, intercepted and exploited, as demonstrated with video feeds from aircraft and anticipated with sonobuoys. Systems analysis merely quantifies the capacity for communication that is feasible under a given probability of counter‐detection. The chapter concludes with a discussion of implications for operations research in the design of unmanned vehicle systems.
