In this chapter, the author explores the pros and cons of roundabouts versus traffic lights, two‐way stops, and four‐way stops. A roundabout is a circular intersection in which traffic travels in a counterclockwise direction around a center island. Usually there are four roads that allow drivers to enter and leave the roundabout. In theory, vehicles arriving at the entry roads should yield to those already in the roundabout. According to Wikipedia, one of the first U.S. roundabouts was built in San Jose, California in 1907, and the first British roundabout was built in 1909 in Letchworth Garden City. Florida has more roundabouts than any other state, but per capita, Maryland has the most roundabouts—one out of every 363 intersections have a roundabout. In many situations, roundabouts create three types of benefits: reduced congestion, fewer and less serious accidents, and reduced operating cost.
