The shipboard power generation and distribution system is usually 60 Hz, three‐phase, and ungrounded. The fault current analysis is performed to establish the mechanical strength and electrical properties of circuit breakers, switches, and bus bars. This equipment must be designed either to withstand the fault‐generated energy, or the protective devices must be set to clear the fault promptly and safely. It is important to determine the value of the potential current likely to occur under short‐circuit conditions and ensure that the devices installed to interrupt the fault current are rated to withstand it and operate in a programmed manner. A stability analysis of the electrical power system shall be carried out and shall comprise system transient behavior following disturbances during relevant operational modes of the installation. A relay coordination study shall be carried out to determine the settings of the protective relays and direct acting circuit breakers.
