A gait is a strategy for using the body to generate movement through the physical environment. The term is commonly applied to the footfall patterns of legged gaits in terrestrial animals particularly that of mammals but the concept applies to identifiable movement patterns of any locomotion. This chapter focuses on how the motions in such gaits are currently categorized. It defines the fundamental mammalian gaits and explains Hildebrand's quantitative comparison between different gaits, speed, individuals or species. Symmetric gaits can be characterized by three measurable features: stride duration, duty factor, and phase lag between limbs. In asymmetric gaits, the movement and timing of each limb of a pair is not equal. Abourachid's suggestion that gait should be considered as a succession of antero‐posterior sequences (APS) is discussed. The gait analysis methods discussed are quantitative, and can often distinguish between quite subtle features of the way an animal utilizes its limbs for locomotion.
