Recent developments in image analysis techniques have enabled the measurement of the precise locations of aggregate particles in sawed sections of asphalt cores. Statistical tests are applied to the asphalt core cross sections to quantify the inhomogeneity (segregation) of hot-mix asphalt cores. The Runs test uses the frequency of aggregate in the various layers of the hot-mix asphalt cores. The Quadrat test also uses the frequency of aggregate, but the test statistic is computed as the coefficient of variation of the number of particles in panels randomly located on the slice face of the specimen. The Average Depth test compares the average depths of aggregates of different gradation sizes. The methods differ in their ease of application and their ability to discriminate across levels of inhomogeneity. The value of computer simulation in assessing the power of the tests is demonstrated.
