Traffic signal power failures can degrade efficiency and safety at intersections that warrant traffic signal control. Alternative power sources (APSs) are typically used to supply traffic signals in power outages. Agencies that operate signals need a decision-making framework to identify locations and deployment schedules for APS installation. This paper presents a methodology for optimal deployment of APSs at signalized intersections. This methodology can also be used to investigate the economic viability of using wind and solar energy as APSs for signalized intersections. Benefit–cost analysis is used as an economic tool. The primary benefit of an APS is improving traffic operation efficiency and safety. The renewable energy sources, if harnessed, would add energy production and environmental benefits. The methodology this research presents can be adapted to site-specific conditions by appropriately choosing the model inputs. A case study is provided to demonstrate the step-by-step implementation of the proposed methodology.
