This paper summarizes a research project in which observers recorded the speeds and distances of vehicles decelerating in the through lanes before turning right into a driveway. All data were collected on multiline urban arterial roadways with posted speeds of 35 mph, 40 mph, or 45 mph. The main objective was to develop speed–distance models for the decelerating vehicles; deceleration was not linear, and was best modeled in three stages. In addition, the models developed during this project were compared with previous models developed by others, the effects of deceleration on the through traffic stream were examined, and the implications for designing the lengths of right-turn deceleration lanes were considered.
