This paper addresses the application of real-time feedback route guidance to a large-scale express ring road. The paper starts with a brief introduction of some necessary notions, followed by a short presentation of the feedback routing strategy of the PI type and an ideal iterative routing strategy of the Frank–Wolfe type, as well as of the macroscopic freeway traffic flow modeling tools METANET and METANET-DTA. The Amsterdam express ring road A10 is considered for the route guidance investigation. More specifically, the introduced feedback strategy and iterative strategy were tested in simulation with regard to A10 with the use of METANET and METANET-DTA. The results indicate that real-time route guidance can help reduce heavy nonrecurrent congestion and establish dynamic user equilibrium.
