The objective of this paper is to examine contributory factors of motorcycle-related injury and fatal crashes and provide safety countermeasures and interventions based on modelling results. Motorcycle crashes, from 2007 to 2009, in Kentucky State were utilized as data source and two binary logistic models, for motorcycle-related injuries and fatalities, were developed respectively. Roadway conditions, roadway type, roadway alignment, gender, age, crash avoidance behaviors, airbags were found to be significant factors. Speed, curves, and crash avoidance maneuvers of braking and steering were found to be strongly correlated with motorcycle injuries and fatalities. According to modelling results, control of motorcycle access on interstate/state highways, roll stability systems, educational and training programs, usage of helmets, and deployment of airbags and anti-lock brake systems are suggested for motorcycle safety improvement.
