The authors have developed the SOUKA(R) process, a shaping of the conventionally cut weld edge by a specific profile roller. A device for optimum blank matching SEEM(R), which increases the weld quality even with deformed weld edges now further improves this well-known method. The subsequent quality control device SOUVIS(R) 1 measures the remaining gap and accurately controls the lateral laser spot positioning. Right after the welding SOUVIS(R) 2 cameras measure the weld profile and the seam width. As an additional feature, an easy-to-use optical detector SOUVIS(R) 3 measures local surface variations of the weld seam and is capable to detect small intrinsic weld imperfections like discontinuities, pinholes and skips. The machine controller then decides about acceptance or rejection of the welded blank based on the information gathered by all three SOUVIS(R) systems and the corresponding threshold and sensitivity settings. Production figures of the welder incorporating the mentioned features show the unique performance and safety of the concept. Results of the SOUVIS(R) quality control system related to the corresponding cross sections of different samples demonstrate the extraordinary detection sensitivity for weld defects and on the same time the exceptional discrimination capabilities.
