Starting with the supply of pipe for the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System, Japanese pipe-makers have promoted the development of line pipe which meets respective application conditions, and therefore they have succeeded in developing steel pipe that satisfies such strict quality requirements as high strength, improved toughness and high corrosion resistance, and have established production capacity of such high-quality pipe. In addition, further technological improvements are being pursued. Development and stable supply of higher strength line pipe for long-distance natural gas pipeline projects now underway are becoming emerging issues for world steelmakers. The current trends in performances required of line pipe are discussed, the prospects for line pipe production in Japan are highlighted. Line pipe makers in Japan have attained many records in this direction and thus will be able to contribute toward the realization of future major-scale pipeline projects.
