Oil has been traditionally used for quenching SAE 5160 automotive leaf springs. Advancements in quenching technology, primarily polymer quenchants, have enabled automotive leaf spring manufacturers to replace conventional quenching oils with a polymer quenchant. The advantages of polymer quenchants include reduced fire hazards, increased safety, reduced environmental impact, and certain economic advantages. Polymer quenchants also provide greater processing flexibility due to their adjustable cooling rates. The paper will focus on the experience of using a particular polymer quenchant. The polymers used are PEO (Polyethyl oxazoline) and PVP (Polyvinyl pyrrolidone). The applications include both free quenching and fixture quenching. The teamwork between the spring manufacturer, quenchant supplier, steel supplier and machine builder required for the successful implementation and manufacturing will also be reviewed.
