Conducting a proper pipeline integrity programme is not possible without the accurate knowledge of the pipeline's condition. In-line inspection (intelligent or smart pigging) provides a means for the reliable inspection of a wide range of pipeline flaws. Different non-destructive evaluation technologies can be adapted to meet the requirements for finding specific types of flaws, although no universally-applicable tools are yet available. In order to achieve the maximum benefits from the technologies in use, and the tools available, it is essential to recognize the problem and define the scope of the inspection to be carried out. Matching the specifications of the in-line inspection tools to the defect specifications and other requirements of the inspection are a prerequisite for a successful inspection. This is a very-complex and responsible task that can only be done by close cooperation between the pipeline operator and the pigging provider. Doing this well provides the reward of solid and reliable information which will form a certain foundation for an efficient pipeline-integrity monitoring and assessment programme. Once the inspection has been performed, the vast amount of data is stored in a data-management system. It enables archiving analysis and cross-referencing of inspection data allowing it to be incorporated or combined with any commercially available geographical information based systems.
