Of increasing importance in the automotive industry is the reduction of development time and costs by virtual prototyping. The accuracy of the numerical methods depend essentially on the correct modeling of the material behavior and on the assessment of material properties. Especially, the simulation of material damage is important for the development of next-generation ASF(AUDI Space Frame)technology. In this paper, the deformation and fracture behavior of two aluminum base materials and two welded joints (heat affected zones) is characterized by tests with miniature specimens and simulations with the modified Gurson model which describes the influence of stress triaxiality and loading rate on the damage development with good accuracy. It was found that the anisotropy effect has to be taken into account to model the tension tests with flat specimens. The application of these damage models in, e.g., crash simulations with commercial finite element codes like PAMCRASH gives very promising results. However, the direct transferability of laboratory data to the PAMCRASH-code suffers from the facts, that at this only small plastic deformations are covered, and, that for practical reasons critical zones in the structure can not be modeled with the necessary mesh refinement. First steps to overcome these difficulties are presented and discussed.
