The road transportation industry is under great pressure by legislators because it is seen as a major factor of pollution of the environment. The automotive industry is very active in tackling this problem and is reconsidering the use of materials in a vehicle. The future of steel in a car will depend on the capacity of steel makers to help car makers to produce environmental friendly cars. This paper will first describe the forthcoming European legislation on cars and environment protection and the various solutions under study at carmakers. Then it will set out to explain future steel developments in Europe. The challenge is to help car makers to make lighter cars while increasing their safety and keeping them affordable. Future steel developments should be adapted to the specific transformation and final properties required by the various parts of a vehicle. Recommendations are given for parts like longitudinal members involved in crash energy adsorption, for parts concerned with prevention of intrusions, for parts that have mainly an acoustical and/or thermal role or for hang-on panels.
