Limited energy resources plus the objective to reduce CO2 emissions mean, that car manufacturers are compelled to develop a light weight car, which is economical, safe, and competitive on the market. In this context, the sheet metal working industry has to make a substantial contribution to the necessary weight reduction. A major source of potential weight saving lies in light-weight car body design utilising high strength steel, aluminium and magnesium alloys and tailored blanks. To realise a wide acceptance of light-weight cars on the market, these vehicles have to be reasonably priced. A reduction of costs can be realised by the reduction of process stages, a powerful simulation, new tooling and innovative press concepts.
