For marine chemical tankers the combination of good corrosion resistance and high strength has established the duplex steel UNS S31803 as a standard material for the cargo tanks. The savings compared to a similar design in AISI 316LN has proven to be about 10 percent of the weight of the tank system i.e. about 30-250 metric tones for a single ship. For tank containers, the strength of the duplex stainless grades may not always be utilized to it's full potential due to the design codes involved. The design codes makes the duplex grades less applicable from a strength point of view for low pressure tank containers, but for the tanks designed for high pressure (over 8 bar), the duplex alternative offers big advantages. In tank terminals the use of duplex stainless steels for storage tanks, instead of the more commonly used 316L, offers a great potential for the reduction of both costs and the amount of material needed for the construction of tanks. Both UNS S31803 and UNS S32304 have been used for storage tanks and especially the latter should have a good chance of becoming a standard material for storage tanks.
