This paper presents a review some of the options that are available to the designer and fabricator for improving the fatigue performance of welded structures. As a starting point, the main factors influencing the fatigue strength of welded connections and their relative importance are discussed. The importance of good design practice and high quality fabrication methods are highlighted. Recent developments in welding technology with relevance to increased fatigue strength are reviewed. The techniques that are included in the IIW recommendations for improving weld fatigue strength, grinding, TIG dressing and peening are reviewed. Additionally the relatively new methods of ultrasonic impact treatment (UIT) and low transformation temperature (LTT) weld material are discussed. The benefit in terms of higher S-N curves, and the practical use in fatigue design is described. Recent examples of application of improvement techniques to offshore structures are presented. One of the main challenges for future research is to establish design stresses for improved welded high strength steels that increase in some proportion to the steel strength. More data is also needed for the behavior of improved weld under variable amplitude loading. Materials such as stainless steels and titanium are used increasingly in load carrying components, and there is a need for design data for improved welds in these materials.
