The results of the study concerning the effect of cooling rate after solution treatment on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the duplex stainless steel UNS S 31803 and the superduplex grades UNS S 32750 and UNS S 32760 confirm those previously obtained for the superduplex alloy UNS S 32550. In all cases, in the absence of sigma phase, a decrease in cooling rate does not affect the tensile properties and has little influence on corrosion resistance, but gradually reduces the impact strength. Refinement of the alpha/gamma microstructure lowers the ductile-brittle transition temperature, particularly in the direction parallel to the fibre pattern, and can partly attenuate the effect of slow cooling at the centre of thick products. Compared to duplex alloys, the ferrite in superduplex grades has a much greater tendency to decompose to sigma and austenite on cooling, the phenomenon being amplified by the presence of tungsten.
