A heat size increase in the steelmaking process was achieved within the restrictions of the existing steelmaking shop by satisfying the conflicting requirements of reducing weight and securing strength and rigidity in a new torpedo car and new ladle. The results obtained were as follows: (1) Temperature drop was reduced by 43 deg C (109 deg F) between the blast furnace and converter and by 4.3 deg C (39.7 deg F) between the converter and continuous caster. (2) Desulfurization reaction efficiency in hot metal pretreatment has increased by 30 % and the P distribution ratio at the converter has improved by 13 %, resulting in large decreases in the consumption of submaterials and supplementary materials. (3) Extension of ladle refractory life has resulted in a 15 % decrease in refractory unit consumption. (4) Productivity in the steelmaking division has improved by 7 %.
