In-line inspection tools, 'smart pigs', are devices that detect magnetic irregularities or anomalies in the wall of the pipe that includes corrosion, gouges, and material defects that exhibit metal loss. However, they do not normally detect stress corrosion cracking (SCC), hydrogen embrittlement, hard spots, certain types of horizontal defects, and anomalies on or near the girth weld. Dents if significant, casings, and foreign metallic objects if touching the pipe may also be detected qualitatively. Also, features such as welds, valves, taps, flanges, test station plates, and other appurtenances can be identified. Case histories and field findings using the newly developed 30' (76.8 cm) x 24' (60.96 cm) and 36' (91.44 cm) x 30' (76.8 cm) collapsible smart pigs are discussed. In addition, the results of the first generation smart pigs with enhancements consisting of hardware developments, new field logs, and software are presented.
