A physical scale-modelling technique was used to assess the performance of an impressed-current cathodic-protection (ICCP) system of a naval ship. The results showed that a single-zone ICCP system works satisfactorily for this class of vessel. Because of the findings, it was decided that the position of one of the two midship control points (reference electrodes) should be changed to the aft region in order to obtain optimum performance under all operating conditions. This configuration held good even under partially paint-damaged conditions. It was also observed that ten indium-activated aluminium galvanic anodes were required to protect the structure for a partially-paint-damaged hull, as an alternative to the ICCP system.
