The DACS physical scale modelling technique has previously been employed to study a stylised representation of a ship hull with propellers alone. As the presence of non-ferrous material is a major factor determining the distribution of ICCP over a steel structure, the present study has examined design criteria for protection when there is a second bronze mass. Results suggest that the location of such material is more important than its surface area. Potential profiles produced by various ICCP configurations show that a single-zone system cannot protect a structure when there is more than one area of non-ferrous material, particularly in simulated under-way conditions. The required number of ICCP control zones is related to the number of non-ferrous areas. DACS modelling can determine the location of reference electrodes and anodes required for effective protection. Stylised modelling is required for the development of longer-term design criteria, and detailed models should be employed for the design of ICCP configurations for specific types of ship and other marine structures.
