Mechanical and corrosion tests simulating different offshore environments have been performed on ten different types of duplex and superduplex welded joints prepared with three types of filler materials and with SMAW, GTAW and GMAW processes. In the as welded conditions, the tensile strength is always equivalent to that of the parent material. The impact strength at lower temperatures is influenced by the oxygen content of the weld metal and also by its composition. Among the superduplex filler material, high nickel superduplex and nickel base alloy fillers lead to higher impact strength at low temperature. In the heat treated condition, superduplex with nitrogen presents very high impact strength. The duplex UR 45N+ and superduplex UR 52 N+ present a real improvement in corrosion resistance compared to standard 22Cr. Corrosion tests in representative offshore media confirm the advantages of UR 52N+ superduplex in welded conditions.
