The resistance for stainless steels against crevice corrosion in seawater is dependent on several factors. In order to rank the corrosivity of seawater against crevice corrosion, the two most important properties of the seawater are the potential and the temperature. Design curves representing initiation of crevice corrosion that are plotted versus temperature and potential has by several been used to illustrate the resistance against pitting or crevice corrosion in seawater. Umbilical is one application where superduplex stainless steel tubing is used. The umbilical is used for controlling wellhead functions on the sea floor, using hydraulic lines. The severity of a crevice depends on several factors such as the crevice former and the geometry of the crevice. The existing information is supplemented with testing of seamless superduplex tube with representative crevice condition for an umbilical in natural seawater with different temperatures and potentials.
