Studies with appropriate but non-optimized components have demonstrated that air-coupled through-transmission ultrasound inspections are feasible on full size loaded composite large solid rocket motor (SRM) segments using either an air-coupled transmitter or an air-coupled receiver in the bore. (A liquid coupled transducer was always used on the case.) Using frequencies of 40 to 50 kHz, air-coupled measurements gave usable signal-to-noise ratios while penetrating approximately 48 inches of propellant in addition to the case and insulation. Defects close to the case-side transducer could be localized and imaged by moving the case-side transducer. A 2 ft. by 2 ft. area on the outer case surface could be scanned for each position of the inside transducer. Several engineering improvements are suggested that could further increase the signal-to-noise ratio.
