A very simple model is proposed that can predict the minimum detectable unbond within a solid rocket motor bondline system. This model uses the measured X-ray sensitivity using standard penetrameter indicators as well as an experimental measurement of the dependance of contrast on object size. Both of these measurements can be directly measured on either a film or electronic based imaging system. When combined with the known absorption properties of the material being studied, a direct estimate of the minimum gap size results. The model can be extended to multi-component material sets and to other gap shapes and geometries. Experiments are continuing to test these ideas on a variety of rocket motors and motor simulants.
