An extensive evaluation of effects of deicing salts on environment, traffic safety, and motor vehicle corrosion was performed in two comparable geographic areas: (1) where the use of deicing salts has ceased and (2) where deicing salts are still used. Corrosion attack was evaluated by exposure of test plates of uncoated carbon steel and zinc and inspection of the corrosion condition of police cars in both areas. Corrosion during winter was reduced to less than 10 percent on uncoated steel test plates after use of deicing salt ceased. Cosmetic corrosion decreased by 50 percent on cars used on unsalted roads compared to cars driven on salted roads.
