The use of high-pressure water jetting techniques to remove pipeline coating systems during rehabilitation is discussed. A review is made of the conventional pipeline cleaning techniques. Mechanics of how high-pressure water jets remove coatings is examined, and water jet cleaning equipment and methods are described. High-pressure water jets (17.000 to 25.000 psi) are able to remove corrosion from the surface of steel without deforming the base metal. High-pressure water jets are able tom remove water-soluble contaminants from the surface of pipelines that cannot be removed by conventional blasting. High-pressure water jet cleaning equipment can remove typical coatings at acceptable production rates in the field. Coal tar enamel, asphaltic coatings, polyethylene tapes, and other coatings can be removed from pipelines in one pass of the cleaning equipment. Coatings containing asbestos can be removed safely from pipelines and the removed material collected and disposed of in an approved manner.
