The resistance or otherwise to hydrogen embrittlement of a newly-developed high-strength low-alloy steel being proposed for offshore applications has being investigated using the slow-strain-rate tensile-loading technique at various applied cathodic potentials. The ductility has been used as a measure of the extent of embrittlement severity. It is observed that the material suffers marked loss of ductility at cathodic potentials more negative than -900 mV SCE, and severity of loss tends to increase rapidly up to -1100 mV potential, below which the degree of susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement is independent of the potential.
