In the automobile industry, technological innovation for luxury-class automobile development, entirely apart from low cost automobile development, has become more and more important to meet changes in the international market and demand environment. The development of high performance engines with high power, low fuel cost, and low noise has become an important target. In addition, other new performance levels are being pursued by utilization of new materials. Given this trend, titanium alloys, seemingly destined for utilization only in the aircraft industry due to their high cost, are expected to be used in the automobile industry (for valve face, valve spring, retainer, connecting-rod, intake valve)in the future as titanium makers endeavor to reduce production cost. In this paper, the authors explain the merits of using titanium alloys for automobile parts, and also explain related present and future technological development work.
