A rapid growth of the use of alloy steel powders has taken place in Japan as well as in the United States and Europe, and various powders have been used in high strength P/M parts for the automobile industry. These applications essentially require the carefully-designed addition of alloying elements for strengthening and good compressible powders to increase the sintered density. Kawasaki has recently developed three series of low-alloy steel powders which meet these requirements: 1) A low oxygen alloy steel powder by vacuum-annealing, 2) A composite type alloy steel powder, 3) A new type Ni-Cu-Mo alloy steel powder. This paper describes recent developments in alloy steel powders, in particular their production methods and the properties of these new low-alloy steel powders. Furthermore, a comparison of three grades of alloy steel powders will also be presented.
