This article critically reviews and compares the methods currently used to predict the fatigue life of gas turbines. Categorization of critical and non-critical components and the criteria used to prevent their failure are outlined. The phases of crack growth leading to failure are discussed. Traditional and database fatigue life analysis methods used to predict safe predicted total life are considered, using steel and alloy disc bores as examples. Damage tolerant and retirement-for-cause methods used to predict safe crack propagation life are discussed.
