A statistical method employing extreme values was discussed and proved to be useful in analyzing and controlling engine combustion phenomena. The results of this investigation are summarized as follows: 1) Engine roughness can be judged using Thetapmax fluctuation, because Thetapmax is closely related to Pi and is capable of representing combustion characteristics. 2) A method based on extreme values was applied for judging engine roughness in place of using dispersion or variance statistical techniques. 3) An engine stability limit feedback control system was applied to an experimental engine and found to be adaptive to engine component variation, durability deterioration and other factors.
