Combining lightness, strength and ductility, aluminium-lithium alloys promise to cut weigths of aircraft appreciably by replacing heavier materials used for structural parts. Of the four new Alcoa alloys, 2090 (2.2Li, 2.7Cu and 0.12Zr in percent in weight) is farthest along-aircraft makers plan to replace 7075-T6 with 2090-T6 in high-strength structural applications. As for the others, Alcoa metallurgists class 8090 as a replacement for 7075-T73, which features corrosion resistance, and 8192 to satisfy medium-strength applications.
