The requirement for particle emission reduction of Diesel engines is increasing continuously. One of the possibilities to reduce the particle emission (mainly soot) is the use of a particle filter. Several different systems are already available, operating with ceramic or metal filter materials. The filter elements must be cleaned periodically from the collected soot to allow a continuous operation of the filter. The regeneration is mostly realized by burning off the collected soot. This requires a temperature level above the soot ignition point of approx. 650 deg C (1202 deg F). The soot ignition point can be reduced to less than 450 deg C (842 deg F) by using catalytic treatments on the filter material or catalytic fuel agents. Nevertheless the exhaust gas temperature is in many applications still below the soot ignition point and needs to be heated up by burner or heating systems. In the paper, the 'Porotherm' filter material is presented. It allows the application without any catalysts or additional heating systems because of its electrically conductive SiC honeycomb structure. It is filter element and heating element in one. Porotherm's SiC purity is 99 %. It has a porosity of 60 % with average pore sizes of 70 micron and a specific gas permeability of 50 nPm. The filter material offers a very high resistance against corrosion, thermoshock and high temperatures.
