In modern mobile vehicles with hydraulic systems, environmental aspects have to be brought into consideration. Therefore, there is a trend to the use of biodegradable fluids instead of conventional mineral oils. The use of these fluids is obligatory in forest machinery and in areas sensitive for drinking water resources, in natural parks and on waterways. The biodegradable fluid group can be detailed in natural esters, synthetic esters, polyglycols, and mixtures. First generations of bio fluids exhibited unacceptable compatibilities with standard seals. Furthermore, ester based fluids were extremely sensitive to traces of water, especially when exposed to high temperatures. From a discussion of the functions of hydraulic fluid filter elements in open, closed and combined hydraulic circuits some recommendations are given with regard to the use of biodegradable fluids. It is absolutely necessary to hinder water to enter the hydraulic circuits. This can be accomplished by pressurizing the fluid reservoirs, by water absorbing filter elements in the circuits or (for higher water contents) by the application of water absorbing machines which reduce the amount of water in the fluid below saturation level.
