As over-the road truck fleet operations become increasingly competitive, there is a need for the reduction of their operating costs. In addition, it is becoming increasingly difficult to dispose of used filters and oil as they are considered hazardous waste. A way of adressing both issues simultaneously is with a Continuous Oil Replenishment System (CORS). CORS functions by injecting a small quantity of used oil into the fuel system to be burned. Fresh oil from an on-board makeup reservoir is then added back into the sump. A key concern with the use of this system is the impact of blended oil and fuel on wear or erosion in electronic fuel injectors. In the paper, this effect was studied by using a radioactive method, Surface Layer Activation (SLA). An injector barrel was irradiated to emit gamma rays of a particular energy and was installed in a critical wear location in the engine. Its loss of activity was measured and transformed in a wear versus time curve. By using this method, the relationship between oil concentration in the CORS and injector spill port erosion rate was established. For high and low oil concentrations the effect of filtration on fuel/oil cleanliness and spill port erosion rate was studied. It was shown that an advanced, high efficiency, filtration medium was able to reduce the particle concentration and, hence, erosion rate to almost unmeasurably low levels. The relationship between erosion rate and particle concentration in the fuel system was found to be similar to that observed in a lube oil system. This can help the filter designer establish filter performance specifications. Surface layer activation proved to be an effective tool in measuring erosion in the fuel system and allowed for many conditions to be studied in a short period of time.
