In vehicles with internal combustion engines, the quantity of air used for the combustion process has a volume 14000 times larger than the fuel volume consumed. Due to the concentration of dust in the air the wear on the cylinder and the piston rings would be tremendous if not air filters were used. In these filters the conventional, expensive oil wetting technique is still used but is more and more replaced by modern filter media. Today, numerous different filter media are available, i.e. Polyurethane foams, wire meshes, and media made from glass fibres, cellulosic and/or synthetic fibres with fibre diameters ranging down to 2 to 4 micrometers. The selection of one of these media must be done according to basic requirements as are optimised adaption to the particle size distribution in the air, dust capacity of the filter element (determining the life time of the filter), no particle breakthrough under pulsation of the combustion engine and a stable filter cartridge non sensitive to moisture fluctuations. In automotive applications, cellulose filter media combined with a centrifuge dust separation effect caused by guide blades is an interesting filter principle. Filters of this type reach a 3 times higher dust holding capacity compared to a dry type filter. They guarantee long service intervalls (100000 km), high particle retention efficiency (>99.9 %), low pressure drop, high stability of the filter and the cartridge, optimised silencing properties and optimum space utilisation.
