This paper deals with some of the problems connected with the design of structural elements of automobile frames using composite materials. They are used to reduce the weight of the vehicle and to simplify the construction of the frame, by reducing the number of parts that make it up. In consideration of the complexity of the geometry, the strong anisotrophy of the laminated composite material both because of its elastic charcteristics and also because of its resistance, design has to be carried out using the method of finite elements. Three particular applications are presented: design of a platform with reference to the anchorage of the back seats; design of a contoured bottom to obtain a skimming effect in sportscars, with particular reference to the ideal arrangement of the fibres and optimum value of the thickness of the sheets to obtain the maximum rigidity of the bottom; design of the front structure with particular reference to the characteristics of energy absorption in case of a crash.
