A nondestructive examination (NDE) methodology was developed at Bell Helicopter Inc., to enhance the detection and enable the quantification of fiber waviness in thick composite materials used to manufacture flight critical components. The new method involves PC-based visualization routines using computer-aided tomography. A computer program was developed to enable the user to view, analyze and interact with the 3D representation of individual composite layers. Specialized software routines were also developed to reconstruct ply representations from the tracer images.
