The trenchless installation of pipelines by microtunnel pipe jacking presents new challenges of understanding to the geotechnical engineer. Since the introduction of microtunneling technology to North America in 1984, the number and complexity of microtunnel installations has steadily increased. This paper summarizes some of the key geotechnical engineering aspects of microtunneling through soft ground as experienced in the San Francisco Bay area including: shafts; thrust blocks and reaction walls; jacking force estimates; tunnel stability; oversize materials and obstructions; soil bearing capacity to support the microtunnel machine; spoil removal and solids separation; hydrofracture and slurry loss; shaft backfill and manhole settlement; and ground treatment.
